Simply hit the bottom of the white ball

Get a roll of sticky tape and put it down on a table so that it will roll. Now place your finger(s) on the top and apply force pushing down towards the table. The tape will be pushed away from you, but because there is force from the back spin you get from pushing down, it will quickly run out of forward momentum and begin to roll back to you. This is basically the same thing for a pool ball. It's all about momentum and spin.

I know nothing about pool but if you hit the ball on the bottom it will rotate towards you, thus making it come back after the forward force ends.
