And the attempt at sarcasm doesn't work because none of the action in Anakin and Obi-Wan's duel resembles anything in any of the Matrix films. Literally, nothing. Not in the way it was shot, edited, etc... That duel sucking has nothing to do with how long it was. It sucked for the same reason all the other non-duel scenes in the prequels sucked: Lucas' direction is lifeless. He basically sat back and shot plates so that ILM can do their CGI on them.

I was attempting to use heavy sarcasm. The fight scene here sucked HORRIBLY, just like M2. It was insanely drawn out, contrived, unbelievable, and boring. Jumping about on magma caps in flowing lava is beyond absurd. Such a thing would only be acceptable coming from an 8 yr old.

No. I wrote this: "RLM is being deceitful about the entire ROTJ duel because the part where Luke lashes out at Vader only came at the end of the duel." Luke is not lashing out at Vader until that last part of the end. RLM either does not understand the scene or is being deceitful in order to make an incorrect point about the fighting. He talks as if when everyone fights they always let their emotions get the best of them. But that is the opposite of what a smart combatant does.

You keep saying that the only time luke let go of his anger and started swinging at Vader was when Vader was down, and I keep pointing out that he was doing that when he attacked from under the stairs. Yes, he is more intense when Vader is down, but that doesn't mean he wasn't angry and attacking wildly earlier. I agreed that they shouldn't have cut to the last part of the duel so fast in that clip. Of course RLM understands that scene, you are just trying way too hard to nitpick the review.

I have no idea what you are on about here. I wrote that the whole point of that duel was Vader trying to get Luke's anger overwhelm Luke. Luke's yell and having a "warface" is nothing compared to the last part which comes after he has already where he is swinging his lightsaber like it was a bat. How Luke fought before and that moment are totally different. Luke was trying to hold his emotions back since Vader and the Emperor wanted Luke's anger to help him turn Sith. RLM didn't understand that.

Sure, Luke's yell and warface had nothing to do with anger. Also the fact that he was overpowering Vader by pushing his lightsaber and his body with the strength in his attack had nothing to do with anger either. When Luke was under the stairs he was calm, but when Vader threatened Leia, he lost his control and his anger made him stronger. This is all before the part when Vader was holding the railing and Luke cuts off his hand.

RLM has no point. He presents that part, which by that point Luke had already won, as if Luke was nothing but angry the entire time and just swinging his lightsaber like an animal but that's just not true. Luke was not fighting that way before and the reason he didn't was because had he fight that way Vader would've beaten him. In fact, that was the whole point. Vader was trying to anger Luke so that he would lose control and become Sith. After Luke did get angry, Luke stopped and rejected it.

The editing of that part of the review was a little off, but RLM's point still stands. When Luke first attacked from under the stairs he was full of anger and swinging wildly. They should have stayed with that clip a little longer. They did cut to soon to the part where Luke is slamming his lightsaber on a down, but not totally defeated Vader.

Except that no one from the Matrix films worked on any of the Star Wars films. And yes, long combat scenes are great if they are done right. Lucas though doesn't really know what he's doing and doesn't really care. Just look at that stupid ending in the last duel of Revenge Of The Sith. Obi-Wan cuts almost all of Anakin's limbs with one strike because he "had the higher ground". Pure nonsense.

No. Luke already won before that. Look at that part again. Vader is down. He is not fighting back anymore. Luke has already won. After that point that's when Luke starts striking like an animal because he knows he has Vader beat. Had Luke fought like that before he would've lost and he didn't fight that way before that moment. That's why RLM is wrong and is misrepresenting Vader's and Luke's duel from ROTJ.

No, the part where Luke has Vader near the rail as he is just about to cut off his arm is were he won the duel. The duel lasted until that moment. One could say that Luke won the duel against Vader by his refusal to fall to the hatred of the dark side as well.

tbh i never really liked luke skywalker, the whole simple farmhand thing never did it for me, i find it really annoying to just have the archetype good guy... "he may not know what a lightsabre is... but goshdarnit his hearts in a good place!"

It would have been nice (just dreaming out loud) to see 2 movies instead of 3, one with a young Anakin, training and become strong, compassionate, etc... and see him GROW UP as a Jedi, and give us a chance to look into the mysterious training of the Jedi. See him identify, believe so strongly... maybe start at 13 yrs and see him grow into a great man w/ Obi. And in Part 2 see the tragic, heartbreaking descent... almost a self-betrayl unfolding. Love, grief, shame, etc all the motives.

yeah, i guess. btw, i posted that before i watched the video and heard the same topic raised and resolved. haha i remember really enjoying the episode 3 game on ps2.i think there was a scene of vader attacking the jedi 'librarian' we see with obi-wan in episode 2.

I agree, it was definitely the best fight in the prequels with actual emotion, but it went on way too long. When they started swinging on cables and surfing lava, the fight became the same old crap.
